Built on the same frame as the SD40, SD38, and several other EMD locomotives, the EMD SD45 was produced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from December 1965 through 1971, with a total of 1,260 units built.

These powerful freight locomotives were equipped with EMD's 645E3 20-cylinder diesel engine, producing 3,600 horsepower. SD45s served on numerous major railroads, including Burlington Northern, Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, Pennsylvania, Great Northern, Union Pacific, and Northern Pacific.

Today, preserved SD45 locomotives can be found at several railroad museums and historical organizations, including the Great Northern Railway Historical Society, Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Virginia Museum of Transportation, Utah State Railroad Museum, Illinois Railway Museum, and Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
